We’re here to help

Dealing with an illness or injury can be stressful, but we’re here to make the process as smooth as possible. Our priority is helping  active adolescents return to the sport they love quickly and safely and supporting them throughout that journey.

That means test results as soon as we have them to share – often on the day of your appointment. It also means fully personalised care plans drawn up by experts in a wide range of specialities, all working together to ensure you get the very best care we're able to give.

Even if your care is complex, we provide rapid access to HCA Healthcare UK’s state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring advanced tests, scans, and treatments can begin without delay. Whatever the challenge, we’re here to guide each young person through recovery with expertise, compassion and clarity.

What to expect

Your patient journey

We understand that a sports injury or health concern can be worrying – not just for young people, but their families as well. Our job is to make the process as clear, supportive and stress-free as possible. Whether you’re visiting us with a new injury or ongoing concern, we’ll listen, guide and support at every stage.

01

Your first appointment

At your first visit, you’ll meet one of our specialists. They’ll take time to listen to your concerns, understand your symptoms and learn what matters most to you and your sport. We’ll work with you to agree on the next steps, so you feel fully involved and confident before moving forward.

02

Tests and scans

If you need tests or scans, we’ll explain exactly what’s involved and why. Most imaging, such as MRI, CT, ultrasound or EOS scanning, can often be carried out in the same place on the same day. Results are shared quickly, so you won’t be left waiting or worrying.

03

Treatment

Should you need treatment, we’ll guide you through all the options clearly – from physiotherapy and rehabilitation programmes to medical treatment or referral to another specialist. Every plan is tailored to your needs, helping you recover safely, protecting your long-term health and getting you back to training.

04

Ongoing care and support

Our support doesn’t end once your treatment begins. We’ll be there with regular follow-ups, progress reviews and clear return-to-play plans. And if you have any questions or concerns, we’ll do everything we can to give you the answers you need. With us, you’ll always have the reassurance of experts who understand the specialist and often complex needs of athletes.

A PAtients Experience

Alexei, 17 yr old rugby player

I suffered a collapsed lung while I was on a rugby tour in Canada but thanks to my school’s link with Meliora Medical I felt completely supported from the day it happened. As well as helping me navigate a foreign healthcare system, they arranged for advice from an expert at ISEH and for prompt follow-up on my return home.  The whole medical team took great care to check in on how I was coping mentally, which made the whole experience far less overwhelming and made me feel truly cared for.

Unfortunately I suffered a second collapsed lung a few weeks later but the team moved incredibly fast to coordinate specialist care and secure surgical treatment that I would never have been able to access so efficiently on my own. They made sure every step - from diagnosis to treatment and subsequent follow-up - was handled seamlessly, with psychological support available whenever I needed it and a structured return to exercise and sport plan in place from early on.

I am certain that is thanks to this comprehensive and joined-up approach that my recovery was much smoother than I ever expected. I’m genuinely grateful for the level of care and expertise that helped get me back to full health and back on the rugby pitch.

A parents experience

Alexei's parents

My first conversation with the Centre for Youth Sports Medicine team came just days after our son had left for a summer rugby tour in Canada. What was meant to be his “best summer ever” quickly turned into a frightening situation when a pain he felt at Heathrow turned out to be a completely collapsed lung - nine hours away from home and in a foreign healthcare system.

As parents of sporty children, we’re used to dealing with sprains and strains, but something this serious, happening so far from home, was entirely different. The team kept us fully informed throughout and made it feel as though someone was by his side at every moment. Their medical expertise, combined with their understanding of how to navigate an unfamiliar health system, meant our son received timely, specialist care and had the time he needed to recover before flying home safely.

Their support didn’t stop there. From organising scans to ensure he could travel on our family holiday, to creating a robust, safe return-to-play plan and coordinating follow-up with respiratory specialists at ISEH, they oversaw every step of his recovery.

When his lung collapsed again just before his first match back, the continuity of care was invaluable. One call was all it took to be guided through the next steps and the same day the team had secured urgent access to a leading surgeon in a world-class medical facility, ensuring he received definitive treatment without delay. Four weeks later, he was back on the pitch.

Having a dedicated network of clinicians who specialise in adolescent athletes - people who understand the medical, developmental, and psychological pressures on young players and their families face - made an extraordinary difference. Their coordinated, holistic approach transformed a very stressful situation into a manageable journey, helping our son return to sport safely and with confidence.

FAQs

In most cases, a referral from a doctor is required before seeing one of our specialists. This helps us to ensure we have a complete understanding of your medical history, so we can recommend the right care from the very beginning. If you’re not sure whether you need one, our team will be happy to guide you step-by-step.

Young athletes are still growing, which means their bones, tendons, and joints are more vulnerable to specific injuries such as apophyseal injuries or bone stress conditions. These require specialist knowledge, precise diagnostics, and tailored rehabilitation to avoid long-term issues. Our team also looks beyond recovery, supporting strength, movement, and joint health to help athletes develop safely into adulthood.

Appointments are usually held at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH), Meliora Medical or another HCA Healthcare UK location, depending on the specialist you’re seeing. Physiotherapy will be at Meliora's dedicated facility on Wimpole Street.

We’ll work with you to arrange the most convenient option, so your care is as convenient as possible.

Yes. We work with all major insurers. If you’re planning to use your insurance, we recommend checking with your provider first to confirm your level of cover. Our team can also answer questions and help make the process straightforward.
